Just how much exercise is enough?
Q: I need to lose about 50 pounds. I want to start exercising, but I just don¡¯t know what kind of schedule to follow. My friend says I should work out 40 minutes daily or it doesn¡¯t count. So how much should I exercise? - Couch Potato in Virginia
A: Well, it depends on who you ask: The Institute of Medicine released a report in 2003 telling us to exercise a full hour each day is what it takes to manage our weight; for years we heard we needed 30 minutes day for four or five days per week; and of course, the Surgeon General¡¯s advice from a few years back that a half hour each day would do the trick? You won't hesitate to work out tomorrow morning when you read all the great benefits it will bring!
1..Physical activity burns calories, so the more you just get up and move, the more calories you will burn. You even burn extra calories doing things like running the vacuum cleaner or going up and down steps.
2..Exercise may help you succeed at breaking your weight loss plateau. Many people hit a stopping point where their diet and amount of exercise simply seems to stop working. Increasing your physical activity may give your weight loss another "push" and you'll begin losing again. Strength training is especially effective in doing so because building muscle will burn fat. Don't be scared -- starting out exercising with a class isn't as intimidating as you think ... with these five tips in mind
Use the Buddy System
From step aerobics to boxing aerobics to fitness dancing ... there are so many types of exercise classes out there, it's overwhelming to choose one. Factor in being self-conscious about your weight and feeling out of shape with starting your first class ... it becomes downright scary!
How do I know? Well, when I was more than 50 pounds overweight, I went to my first exercise class at my local YMCA. And guess what? It wasn't nearly as bad as I feared. So, I wanted to share with you some of the things I learned as a newbie!
My first bit of advice would be to go to your exercise classes with a friend. Draft a co-worker, get mom out of the house or kidnap that neighbor who has seen one too many daytime reality programs. Right from the start, you'll both find out how well the buddy system works! Write Comment (0 Comments) |
